Cattle farmers in the southeast are busy getting everything prepared for the coming calving season.

"We're going to start calving around mid-February," shared Sarah Anderson at the Right Cross Ranch. "Probably bring the heifers in a litter earlier than that. We just get them up closer to the barn. just getting them used to the system and get us back used to the system. When you're not calving, it's a little like vacation-mode."

She added that the weather will play a big factor in their season.

"We've spent a lot of time getting windbreaks set up, getting some protection from that northwest wind. We had a big storm here in March and learned a valuable lesson. There's not a lot of trees down here in Saskatchewan so we've been putting up windbreaks and getting ready for some nasty weather in March and April. It seems like that's when the unpredictable stuff come."

"The more prepared the better."

She added that they expect to calve quite a few this spring.

"We're going to calve about 200 in the early group and 200 in the late group."

The early group calves in Mid-February while the late groups starts in May.

The ranch is worked by Sarah and her husband who have a three-year-old and one-year-old daughter.

"We do have a couple here that come and help us do chores but for the most part, it is just the two of us. It's a bit nuts but then there's days when I wouldn't trade it for anything."

But for now, they will be busy preparing and keeping an eye on the weather.

"Hoping for the best as far as the weather goes. In Saskatchewan, you never know what you're going to get."
