The Rosetown Wheatland Regional Centre provides opportunities and supports for individuals living with disabilities. Members of the Regional Centre recently spiffed up and donned their finest, to attend a ‘Black Top and Boa’ themed dance in Wilkie.

The Regional Centre’s Activity Director, Cindy Cerniuk, shared that the Rosetown crew had a blast and even took home some prizes. The group of 15 took home the award for the best dressed group overall and a member of the staff won the best dressed individual award.

The Regional Centre members, were joined by people from organizations in Macklin, Kindersley and Biggar for music, socializing and reconnecting with friends.

“We have a reciprocal agreement to get our participants out into not just our community but others as well-and we support others coming to our facility,” explained Executive Director of the centre, Denni Ernst, “We are really looking forward to having more events like this in the future.”

Cerniuk, who has been with the Regional Centre since 2011, reported that Rosetown’s big hosting event is their annual Halloween Party. This will be the 7th Halloween Party that Cerniuk has put on. She plans to invite participants from eight other Centres and due to the events popularity, they will rent the Elk’s Hall to allow for more space.

Cerniuk said of these events, “These are opportunities for inclusion; for members to celebrate the same holidays at everyone else, for them to meet new friends and reconnect with old friends,” she added, “It is just so much fun to watch them experience the things that we end up taking for granted.”

Do to the fact that the Regional Centre has people of varying capabilities, Cerniuk said it is just a matter of ensuring the correct number of staff required are available to make these outings possible.
