Isabelle Jackson was our first call when we decided to do a local artist spotlight. She goes by the stage name Belle Diabolique and she started working on a new song when we ended the call. It was called "Drift" and to write, arrange and perform a song in that short window of time is simply amazing.

This doesn't happen all the time, but so far every single song performed on the local artist spotlight has been 100% original. Belle set the standard with her performance earlier in the month. It's a modern day miracle that no one played a cover of John Lennon's Imagine, or Dust On The Bottle.

The opportunity to talk on this stage, and sing in to this mic, in front of all of you, has not been taken lightly by anyone. The difference between a stage performance and the radio spotlight most artists point out, is the energy that you draw from a crowd. That energy is not present in a cold quiet studio, but it did not seem to affect the performance. Which you will hear below.

Getting to know you

  1. Favourite colour: Purple
  2. Favourite Food: Borscht
  3. Dream job: Musician, obviously. But if all else fails I'd like to teach skiing on a resort.
  4. Dream Vacation: Visiting Quebec in the winter.
  5. Favourite sport: Skiing. It's a struggle to drag myself out of bed to do it, but it sure is fun.
  6. Batman or Superman: I'm more of a Marvel kid, actually my favourite character is probably Kate from Hawkeye, but for the purpose of the survey I'll say Batman.
  7. Chocolate or Strawberry: definitely chocolate
  8. Fast Cars or Jacked up Trucks: Jacked up trucks, I'd rather have a quiet truck.
  9. Mountains or Ocean: Mountains for sure. I've been to the mountains and the ocean, and they're both pretty, but I just prefer the mountains.
  10. Study space or dinosaurs: Dinosaurs. Palaeontology is a fascinating subject.
  11. Jeopardy or Wheel of Fortune: hmmm, I don't know, Wheel of Fortune.
  12. Monopoly or Clue: Clue
  13. Will you watch Telemiracle? Not all of it, but I might pop in and watch a bit. These performers are giving their all for the province so it feels like the bare minimum to watch the telethon. Ring Those Phones!
  14. Do you prefer Belle Diabolique? All of my social media accounts are under that name, and that's the name I perform with out of town (everybody here knows me, and it feels wierd to use a stage name in town).

Belle Diabolique

Saskatchewan based musician who is vexed by labels and can not choose a specialty. Though her music is generally guitar based and emo-country, the stereotype only lasts until she picks up a recorder, or a ukelele. Her lyrical content is inspired by many things, but the best ideas she's had came to her while attempting to weed the perennial sow thistle. An avid performer, Belle has played at events such as the Saskatoon Fringe festival, the Eatonia centennial, and venues like the Broadway Theatre. If you find her music enjoyable, tolerable, or even enjoyable, you can find her on Youtube.
