Effective starting on April 1 there is an Elm Tree Pruning Ban in effect in Saskatchewan.

The ban goes until August 31 and coincides with the time of year when the elm bark beetle that spreads Dutch Elm Disease is most active.

Dutch Elm Disease is caused by a fungus spread by the tiny elm bark beetles that breed under the bark of dead or dying elm wood. If that wood contains the Dutch Elm Disease fungus, each new generation of beetles can infect healthy elm trees.

If you see an elm tree displaying the signs of Dutch Elm Disease:

  • wilting, yellowing leaves on one or several branches near the top of the tree, usually in late June, you should report it to your local municipality.

It is also illegal to use, transport, store or sell elm firewood in the province.
